(indeed!)

Wondering if anyone can share some experiences with me.

I currently find myself in a situation in which my True Will in a specific circumstance has become very clear to me. The "problem" which I am certain is one of the main problems with getting anything done at all, is that my course of action, although clear in my mind, very much goes against what I have been culturally taught is the "right" (or more acurately "kind" of "compassionate" thing to do). In other words, i know something is right for me, but it seems like it will harm someone else --not because of what I am doing, but because this other person doesn't know themself very well and likes to set themself up for failure.

My question is this. Does anyone have a way that they go about overcoming deeply-rooted, but essentially unhelpful ideas about what "should" be done in order to take specific action. Is the "ripping off a bandaid method" the only way to go here (i.e. just take a deep breath, get some balls, and do what I know i need to no matter whether it hurts or feels hinky), or is there some other way to prepare myself (accept) this kind of cognitive dissonance?

I know I'm being a bit abstract here. Maybe no one will have any advice at all. It seems like this dilemma must come up a lot though.

You've certainly gotten some good advice already, but I thought I'd throw in one more thing about unraveling the "shoulds": Ask yourself what it would mean about you as a person if you did the "right" thing, and what it would mean about you as a person if you did the "wrong" thing. Don't censor yourself when answering these questions--let the "automatic" responses come. By doing this, you may expose (and therefore understand, and possibly begin to heal) a deeper level of identity-clinging, shame, fear, and so on.

There are many methods and tools for overcoming just about anything, with enough diligence and desire. However, it sounds like you are looking for a 'fast and dirty' method in order to get through this 'vague' situation to which you find yourself.

Personally, the best methods are truth, honesty and integrity. Best to simply address the situation from your place of truth [which in many ways aligns you more or less to your true will] and then with calm endurance and compassion work out whatever is 'blocking' your flow, whether that be through discussion or specific work.

But, always...**'to thine own self be true!'

I understand the need to be discreet in this sort of things sometimes, though this also may mean that the advice is general, vague, etc.

The key is that you have to be true to yourself - your integrity has to be upheld. With the problem as you've stated it (using the definition of problem of "two forces of comparable magnitude and opposite trajectory"), it seems one of the following has to be true:

(1) This isn't your True Will - and your psyche is screaming to make you realize that. OR,
(2) The acculturated values, training, etc. are false (at least in this situation) and you nee to follow these back to their roots and make a new (identical or changed) conscious choice about your values. OR,
(3) There is a different means to the same end such that (1) and (2) aren't really in conflict with each other.

Understand that "trueness" (used as if it were an archery term, rather than pertaining to veracity) is a matter of end, not means. If I'm reading between the lines correctly, your concern is over means, and, if that's true, then that may be the root of the seeming conflict.

If it's about a relationship, then you have to do what you have to do - i th most compassionate way available to you, but without backing off of it.
