While I go to school in PA, I do live 45 minutes from NYC so perhaps I can get more involved when I am home. Also, I'll be attending a phd program in a large city like Boston or Philadelphia in the Northeast which should allow me more access to groups.

That may not be close enough for ongoing contact that you want, but it may be close enough for you to attend occasional events (or even the monthly study group). - I'll be there for a lecture and book signing the last Saturday in January, BTW.
