Joining the A.'.A.'.
-
Hi,
I am new here, but perhaps Jim could help me out with this question. I have e-mailed the cancellarius twice and the praemonstrator as well and received no reply from them on the issue of becoming a student. Why would this be? and is there an alternate means of contact? Thanks,

The Cancellaria has been recovering from a hospitalization for several months and nobody has been looking at that email box. (I dread thinking about the thousand or two spam in it from which we'll have to filter out a few real emails when the time comes!) Sorry for the inconvenience.
Most of the responses are slightly tweaked form letters anyway, and I've been looking for a window of time for the last year or two to get the relevant auto responses up on the ordoaa.org web site - but the work load is simply too high and that's at the bottom of the priority list. (I already work the equivalent of three full-time jobs.)
I don't want to get too far into your personal stuff here on the forum, but please respond with your geographical location. Secondly, you would need to pick which Student route you want to pursue - we presently recognize (based on decisions set in motion by Soror Meral) three routes: (1) Completion of Course I of College of Thelema. (2) Completion of the First Order of Temple of Thelema (because it includes all COT Course 1 tasks). (3) The classic Student program.
If you want to pick either (1) or (2), see helema.org for more information. If you want to pick (3), be sure you have all the books listed on ordoaa.org/studlist.htm (physical books, not soft copy - having the books was the one prerequisite Crowley set and the one we stick by). For this purpose, "all the Equinox" means the first 10 volumes plus The Holy Books of Thelema.

I would like to go with door #3.
Although, I don't currently have the books, they would take me no less than a month to acquire. My location is San Antonio, TX.
Thanks for your time and consideration.

When you have acquired them, send me a PM on the forum indicating that you have the books and are beginning your period of study.

I will do so, thanks.
What would the travel requirements be for initiations and such?

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
I too want to join the A.'.A.'. (Today would be nice... ) I think I would make an excellent candidate.
It's been a while since this posting and I just wanted to make sure that some one is checking the email these days because I did not get a response.
Thanks.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
Does anyone know a reliable source to get these books?
I have a local bookstore that has been slowly getting me books, however they are finding it harder and harder to get them.
I don't have a credit card (yet) and so I've been searching local book stores and trying to find them manually.
It's all part of (as soon as I'm supposed to know something, it appears) type of strategy. It's been a pattern I'm following more and more.

Amazon.com and ebay.com are good places to look. None are incredibly difficult to acquire. The lineage of the A.'.A.'. that Jim is representing accepts Gems of the Equinox in lieu of the entire first volume of the Equinox as it contains most of the essentials.

Gems of the Equinox? Forgive me I'm relatively new to getting all the titles straight, I just found the translation of the elphas levi book.
Where can one get all the Equinox?

It's Gems from the Equinox:

By the way, here's a link to pre-order the forthcoming reprint (I believe it is to be released sometime between now and the end of the year):

I started collecting them earlier this month. Though not quite finished, a majority (were?) at used book stores via the Barnes & Noble website. Ebay is the best place if you want to impress your guru by lugging around the 10 original volumes.
Got to have a CC though. Any branch of a major bank should be able to open a checking account for you for $100.00 that includes a check card gauranteed by one of the major CC companies. You can just shut it down after you're done.

Providence has it. I found out that there is several members of the soror estai lineage here in my city and neighboring areas. It seems luck has turned in my favor regarding my magickal advancement.

As if your magical advancement had anything to do with other people?? They can only help point the way to what you need to do yourself anyhow...

Haha, you always seem so anti-establishment, Thelema wise. Yes, it IS the work of the individual that will get them there but having someone who has walked the path ahead of you is certainly a nicety. There is no sense in reinventing the wheel or tripping over the same branch when you can have some one point it out to you beforehand.
Aside from the Book of the Law, perhaps we should never read anything else. Heaven forbid something help you.

Thats presupposing that someone else could have walked the 'path ahead of you' as if your and their path looked anything alike in reality... Each person has their own 'branches' to trip over, and it is in the weathering of the storm that your strength arises. The greater the trial the greater the triumph. But, as always, There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt. They can only beat that into your head so hard before you realize its efficacy (and truth).

I do agree that two paths will never be truly alike but there are similar obstacles to over come. If not, then what was the need for publishing the Vision and the Voice? Why publish any grimoire?

Someone publishing a book for you to read is entirely different than being an authority in an order you join... I do hope you can see the difference. Aside from this, a work like Vision and the Voice serves many purposes, one of which might remotely resemble the role you would expect from an authority in an order...

...and that was my point exactly. Why is it so much better to receive instruction from a book but bad from a person? I feel the more sources the better. A book can't give you feedback, however, which is one benefit of having an instructor.
