Recently, much to my surprise, I learned that my mother had practiced yoga (as I am typing this, I think to ask her how long she was doing it ! ). She stopped right after my birth.

She was not studying under a yogi, instead she had read a number of books and created her own routine.

This made me wonder if yoga practices have any effect on the growing fetus.

Does anyone know anything about this, or able to point me to a resource about it? I am looking to satisfy some curiosity.

Oh ! From her description, it sounded like Hatha.

The effect would be the same as any reasonable exercise problem: good for the health of Mom and the pending young one.

Would different types of yoga provide 'benefits' or even detract from the health of the child in the womb?

I can't think of any that would be harmful, unless they got unreasonably physically dangerous. Possibly really extreme pranayama would overtax, but the pregnant female body is extremely resilient even of such things.

A web search for "yoga pregnancy" turns up a good deal of info.
