Kundalini and Chakras

First, that's a serious digression from this thread's topic, so this sort of thing should generally have its own thread.
Second, that'too big of a question, and a full answer would require a big journey through time. In brief, the original awakening of kundalini occurred when I was a 1=10 (a pretty common place for it), back around 1982. The immediate effects were a significant shift in how I saw (and generally experienced) people, and providing my brain with a new "food" that rapidly expanded the powers and capacities of the mind.
Are the digestive problems experienced by Gopi Krishnah something common place?

I did have horrible problems with my digestion when kundalini development began. My crp started to scintillate in colours never seen before, and the process of digestion and shtting was quite painful at the time. And it stank.
People I knew back then who did traditional kundalini awakening said the stinking strange-looking stuff would come from a) my body de-poisoning itself and b) from my bloodyminded decision to entirely ignore the food rules traditional kundalini yoga has (they thought me a bit insane for ignoring their good advice on this and accept the pain as price for me continuing to eat steak). I stayed with my heavy meat consumption and perhaps that made it more difficult for me.
After a few months these symptoms disappeared, and the flow wasn't painful anymore, my disgestion back to its usual robust state.
I still enjoy a good steak

I didn't have any that I can remember. (It was a long time ago.) And nobody around me eve reported that particular phenomenon. (Though Simon's description and explanation make total sense.)
I don't recall any adverse symptoms at all. The physical sensations in the back were briefly worrisome, until I realized what was happening. There were plenty of physical sensations (along with much more extreme psychological shifts).

Perhaps relevant information: When I started kundalini development, I was not well prepared. It more happened to me due to diverse exercises I was doing, it took some time until I found people who had any idea what was actually happening (I never had a teacher who helped me through the process) and lots of it was trial and error as I was too stubborn to properly listen to anyone about it. (My wife claims this stubbornness never went away)
I quite enjoyed the psychological effects, though. It made me stronger and clearer in my head, and I liked that. All in all, the experience was good, with some side effects that I endured for the sake of finding out "what happens next?"

93,
"The physical sensations in the back were briefly worrisome, until I realized what was happening."
By this did you mean you experienced pain?
I was performing Christopher Hyatts energized meditation and one particular exercise was focused on getting the kundalini flowing. After the first two times I had severe back pain. I don't exactly exercise a lot, but the routine wasn't even strenuous. Is it caused by some sort of 'freeing up' of unwanted energies or is it something else?
93's.

I avoided that word because it would be misleading. Compared to what back pain could be, I'd have characterized this as "discomfort."
"
It could happen - especially if you have some back derangement (scoliosis) or other impediment. -

... pain and cramps can be expected while one works through the underlying rigidities of mind and body in order to relieve them.
Except if one is very well-prepared and in a very flow-like state already before the experience.

Reading this thread has made me realise that though I have a lot of theory about kundalini, but it sounds like if have never had any practical experience (I have done a fair bit with chakras visualization etc. But not kundalini itself) . Could you guys recommend a way to start with the more practical side, or maybe point me in the direction of some resources

Get yourself a teacher who knows what they're doing. Even though I got through the kundalini process alone without serious trouble, many don't, and I wouldn't advice that to be done without competent feedback.

I am very aware of this and believe me if there was a teacher (of of few different things for that matter ) I wouldn't hesitate, but I really live in the middle of nowhere, and unfortunately like everything else I'll have to find my own way. But I am very careful. I think things take me a lot longer but that's because I do them slowly and properly. And now I have you guys! (haha). So any assistance would be gratefully received.
