    Eight of Wands
    SWIFTNESS

Meditation Pattern: Place Atu I, The Magus, and Atu XIV, Art, side-by-side, with the 8 of Wands above them.

Traditional Description: Eight wands, crossed four with four. Flames issue from the point of junction. Surmounting the small wands with flames issuing down them, and placed in the center at the top and bottom of the card respectively, are the symbols Mercury and Sagittarius for the decanate.

Hod of Fire: Energy in its most tenuous sense. Hasty communications and messages; swiftness. Discipline and focus provide swift channels for flow of thought, yet narrow and specialize the viewpoint at the same time. Representative of process rather than outcome.

Mercury/Sagittarius: Very rapid rush, but quickly passed and expended. Too much force applied too suddenly. Violent, intense, but not lasting. Swiftness, rapidity, restlessness, courage, boldness, confidence, freedom, conflict, violence; speech, light, electricity; high-velocity energy; love of open air and the freedom of open space. Generous, subtle, eloquent; soaring thought; yet somewhat untrustworthy; dispersing and scattering one’s energies; rapacious, insolent, oppressive. Theft and robbery. (This card is highly susceptible to the influence of surrounding cards.)

Mercury + Mercury: (Reinforces all Mercury traits.)

    • The abstract expressed in particular and practical manner; strength of the mind: in its adaptability, agility; weakness: these same, to the excess. The greatest virtue of the mind: aspiration towards Truth, working in accordance with this.
    • Ideas permeated with tolerance; wideness of perspective; interest for learning the new for the sake of learning itself – and then the possibility of practical use of that which is learned shows itself spontaneously.
    • An open mind: aligned with the Will.

    • Intellectual creativity; abundance of ideas; dealing with practical material phenomena with playfulness.
    • Art and craft that find quite a practical expression; discovery; insight; an idea that illuminates a situation in such a way that it opens a new view-point and thus solves a presented problem.
    • Writing; oratory that is magically-magnetically persuasive because it hits the very essence of things; conscious use of own thoughts and speech; enthusiastic, energized, use of words; words permeated with meaning, charged, intense.
    • The mind has access to the source of the wealth of mental images, and it willingly draws out whatever is needed in a given moment. (NB: Tesla’s ability to visualize the whole of how an invention would work, with all the practical details of it, without having to draw and calculate on paper any of it)
    • Intention; insight; perceiving the essence of a phenomenon through such penetration into its details that it pierces to the basic universals, but without loosing sight of the particular and the details while doing this.
    • Words that express Will; speech that flows as direct manifestation of Logos (it is perceived by listeners as Light).

    • Mercurial “part”/aspect of Sagittarius: how the Art speaks, how it formulates (puts into form) its creative phenomena, its processes as much as results.
    • Universal language, the root of all languages! Study of Qabalah, and study of the Aleph-beth, the first among the Holy Books (this card speaks about the writing and reading of all the Holy Books!)
