I need some advice please

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
First of all, hello to everyone. I am a long time lurker, first time poster. It is possible that this is in the wrong section of the forum, but I am having an issue.
I have a friend (and no it really is not myself) who is having a very hard time understanding why someone would want to pursue the HGA or enlightenment for that matter. He is of the opinion that once someone attains enlightenment specifically, they would in affect become for all intents and purposes, a zombie with no mind of their own. He is also VERY attached to his ego and he is looking for someway upon death to maintain his ego-identity as he believes his ego contains all his memories and his recognition who he is. He is afraid he will lose that and is seeking any method of keeping that identity upon death. The problem I have is I am rather poor at explaining things to him and I am worried I will only muddle things up or say something incorrectly. It is possible that he is so far into this desire of his that no amount of information can deter him from this way of thinking, but I just get the feeling that he is looking at nothing but disappointment.
If anyone could give me any advice I can pass on to him, I would be very grateful. Some info about him, he is not a religious person and shudders at the mention of anything 'divine' or 'god' even if used in a very broad sense. It's like he automatically shuts down. He has a strong sense of morals and doesn't like the idea of looking inward, he believes all answers to life can be found outside oneself. He dislikes yoga and meditation. He hates existing systems of magick and mysticism and wants to be completely original. Trying to get through to this guy is extremely difficult. But I know he is not intentionally being difficult which is why I am trying so hard. Otherwise I would have given up on this long ago.
As it stands, he is going on some tangent about when he dies, he wants to make it so that his ego/identity/consciousness continues into the astral realm and he can maintain some form of existence as he thinks of himself minus his human body.
I know this all likely sounds very nutty and likely ridiculous. I think it is. Help?
Thank you in advance.
Love is the law, love under will.

You may not like my answer...
He has to change on his own. Until he is ready for the next step, nobody can authentically get him to take it seriously. In fact, his current position may even be in service to that eventuality. But he has to come around in his own time.
You can model your own point of view for him, live your life and success, etc.; but that's about it.
(If he has specific sincere questions, we can probably help you with the answers; but it doesn't sound, from your desription, that he's sincerely interested in any answers that might upset his applecart.)

Don't worry about him. You have too much work to do yourself. Don't worry, I won't work hard to convince you - I have too much work to do myself.

Thank you both for your amazingly fast responses. And to Jim Eschelman, I will say I actually did like your answer. It is kind of what I was thinking. Just wanted some outside advice. BTW, off topic, I recently received your book on the A.'.A.'.. Awesome stuff.
