The Great God Pan
-
I have been looking for books of reasonable price on him, the only 3 I have came across are "Panparadox", "Rainbows falling on my head", and "The cult of pan in ancient greece". Of which all of these are very over priced(If you consider $150-$700 a bit expensive for a book). Which includes Amazon and Ebay, both have these over priced.
Just wandering if anyone here has any good recommendations on the subject of Pan, and working with him.

Why not some general book on Greek mythology? Of these, Graves is the best.
Specialized books on Pan alone are usually trying to sell a particular point of view that is different from understanding the god as the ancient Greeks knew Him.

Thanks for the tip. Ya I was looking for some instruction book lol. Recently I've chosen Pan as my personal Patron Diety, and I want to learn how to work with him. So this subject is a bit knew to me. How does one start working with a diety? would I have to design my own rituals and excercises around that diety? like experiment?

Read Liber Astarte.

Dion Fortunes The Goat Foot God was an interesting read that I think may be very helpful in what you are contemplating.
Homers Hymn to Pan is a classic
as is Crowley'sPan is a very complex force and I have yet to find any one source that does justice.
For working with him.....well he really likes sex.....I mean really likes sex.......at least that what I have gotten out of working with him....very lusty, full of life and love, primal in oh so many ways.... -
Yeah, I was going to say: To worship Pan, just make sure that everyone, man or woman alike, bows deeply before you... facing away from you!
And I do mean everyone!

This is what hooked into me a long time ago.....
Invocation to Pan by Dion Fortune
I am she who e'er the earth was formed rose from the sea
O first begotten love come unto me
And let the worlds be formed of me and theeGiver of vine and wine and ecstasy,
God of the garden, shepherd of the lea -
Bringer of fear who maketh men to flee,
I am thy priestess answer unto me!Although I receive thy gifts thou bringest me -
Life and more life in fullest ecstasy.
I am the moon the moon that draweth thee.
I am the waiting earth that needeth thee.
Come unto me great Pan, come unto meThis is an awsome site
www.theriteofpan.com/Welcome.htmlWhen I first started looking more into this archtype I found much information to be conveyed in art, namely the paintings, sculptures, vases and bass-reliefs (sp?). I would spend hours looking over prints and drawings for books...(kids books have lots of source material for symbolism).
While I enjoyed reading the mythology stories they seemed, diluted or Panned down (wierd how that word fit). When I looked deeper into anthropology, and animism specifically I found much clarity to the ideas of the Greeks and Romans, and even the Celts, and Norse for that matter. I read a fantastic book on the origins of Eros (whoes title I cant recall, nor did I write it down:( ) in which the primal aspects of Pan were compared and corresponded in a beautiful way.
Never gave it much thought, but Pan is has been pretty much the only masculine aspect I have ever worked consciously with....and my son is a capricorn....Being fun, not just having fun is very intrgral.

That is a beautiful invocation. I am going to add that site to my list, I havent looked at it yet, but I deffinately will. I have been finding great info on him. It was believed that Faunus was the one who "gave" the romans there beliefs. Just so much that makes me go awwww!

Among some of the greek/latin names for pan, there was a common greek triad of him. Agreus, Nomios, and Phorbas. All three meaning, the hunter, the shepherd, and the terryfying one. Phorbas, spelled as is, with first Pe, not Final. So spelled Pe, He, Ayin, Resh, Bet, Aleph, and Semekh. Which is 80+5+70+200+2+1+60= 418!!! I'm loving researching on this diety, every step is a suprise!

The god that I learned to assume godform with was Pan. It became a very fun year long initiation into sex, debauchery, S&M, and all the glory of the Nephesch. Eventually I got over my sexual neurosis and began to see Pan everywhere and all the time. The climax of the working was a full on ceremony using the Hymn to Pan and assumed full godform, so much so, that the officers present claimed a physical transformation had occurred... while the only thing I knew that had changed was that condition of what is in my pants.

I once ate so many mushrooms and found on my knees babbling like a goat, (bleating is the phrase?), and laughing hysterically, so hard it was almost a seizure. After the goat phase (a good hour or so), I proceeded to give my partner at the time the best (and her first!) orgasm I've ever seen elicited from a woman. This was all in the forest a good ways from anywhere, and it ranks amongst my top psychedelic experiences, like McKenna's acid trip in Nepal.
Just thought I'd share accounts.

Wow, sounds like you had the real deal happen. I cant wait to see what happens with my experiences. I havent actually started assuming god-forms yet, but soon. I am still sorting out some things plus doing what digging I can on him first to learn as much as I can about him, and then ofcourse getting to LIber Astarte... Oh in Greek Pan is the word for "all". So yeah he is the Great God Pan.

This thread inspired me to start invoking Pan again!
Thanks!
IO PAN IO IO PAN PAN!
