3. Then the word of Adonai came unto me by the mouth of the Magister mine, saying: O heart that art girt about with the coils of the old serpent, lift up thyself unto the mountain of initiation!
4. But I remembered. Yea, Than, yea, Theli, yea, Lilith! these three were about me from of old. For they are one. -
For they are one.Learn to swim? The waters of intoxication?
To me these three dragons suggest the overmastering fullness—the chaos of life, the opiate of pleasure and the heady joy of experience, calling me to join them in the deep waters. Is this joy a small part of that greater experience, or something other, a distraction? Will they lift me up or drag me down?
Love and Will

Let me say that I think I need more of an understanding of this. In the air meditation we discussed having the coils of the snake around us. Hear it talks of the heart being coiled by the old serpent. Is this a relationship to the serpent of the air meditation or is it of an olderserpent that we are trying to let go of.
Out of Than, Theli and Lillith, I have only heard of Lilith who was supposed to be Adams first love (before Eve) amongst other stories that I have heard about but do not know the whole story. What I understand of her was that she was more of a women’s liberationist (my understanding anyway) but since I don’t know too much about her maybe I am doing her wrong (misquoting myself) by even saying that little bit.

ANALYSIS:
The point of view is that of the Adept who is receiving a Word from the Angel (essentially: from the Yod) through the medium of Neshamah. That is, the Adept is plugged in, connected, open, receiving. And the Word or impulse received is: Lift thyself up!The distinction is made here between the serpent in the title of the book, the one that "girts" the heart in the Knowledge of Conversation of the HGA. Here, instead, we have "the old serpent" - at best, Nephesh that is a misdirection; at worst, a qlippothic aspect of ourselves. In either case, it is this "old serpent" that constricts and restricts the Adept, holding him back from his Next Step.
He recognizes it: He recognizes the old holds. (We all have old holds from which, in time, we must "depart." I suppose it doesn't matter much what Crowley's were.) Lilith, whatever the historic evolution of the character in Rabbinical literature, is here used specifically as the chief Q'lippothic expression of Malkuth - not just "the woman," but specifically the malignant and outgrown aspect of the Qaballistic Queen, Bride, Daughter, etc.
These points set the stage - tell us our point of departure for what comes. It's easy for me to see these historic hold-me-back elements at most periods of my life. When the impulse from Chiah comes, when the voice of the HGA reverberates through Neshamah into the illuminated and receptive Ruach, it's time to take a fresh look at what makes us small, constricts us, holds us back. It's Wake World in a nutshell.

From the Sefer Yetzirah
"1. In proof of these things, and witnessing faithfully are the Universe, the Year of time, and Man himself, the Microcosm. He fixed these as testimonies of the Triad, the Heptad, and the Dodecad; the twelve constellations rulers of the world, the Dragon (THELE) Tali which environs the universe, and the microcosm, man.
The triad, fire, water, and air; the fire above, the water below, and the air in the midst. The proof of which is that air is a participator with both.
- Tali, the Dragon, is above the Universe, as a king on his throne; the sphere in the year as a king in his State, the Heart of man as a king in warfare."
Also (talking about Aleph, Mem, Shin in a way that reminds me of the meditation verses)
"These three mothers again represent in the Microcosm or Human form, male and female; the Head, the Belly, and the Chest; the bead from the fire, the belly from water, and the chest from the air lieth between them."

I don't know about you, but my Nephesh still eats and breathes.

"I haven't heard of Than or Theli either, but it would be neat if Than and Theli were the bird and the snake. We would then have a trinity of Serpent, Woman and Eagle. So... Scorpio & Water? "
They are two serpent-demons, companions of Lilith, from The Zohar.

That puts a different spin on things... Kundalini reference?"
I think just plain old low-vibration biological-level reactive Nephesh.
Over the next few days we will see how the Angel is called on to loosen their hold... and what happens next.
