Strange “breaks” during Dharana
-
These are rather ordinary phenomena. (Unless I'm misunderstanding you, and there is some narrow part of the quote that is throwing you.) It's quite routine that somebody settling down to try to put an exact picture in their mind and hold it unwavering and unchanging will quite quickly see it misbehave.
It should take you about 30 seconds (or less) to prove this to yourself. Sit in a quiet, relaxed state and picture a yellow square exactly three inches on each side, against a dark gray background. Can you do 30 seconds without it changing size, rotating, spinning on its axis, the square or the background changing color, or the whole thing turning into a banana?

"What I find most puzzling is not the misbehave it self but the fact that this misbehavior was expected to be showing some kind of meaning."
Oh, yeah. I skipped right over that. It's bullshit. (Except that it may reflect a projection or preoccupation in the practitioner's mind, much as something might appear in a dream. In any case, it's generally transient and of no import.)
"
"That from this type of meditation can be discovered the character of the person meditated upon."It sounds like Crowley was observing that the behavior was somehow connected to the very nature of the person he was picturing in his mind."
If the practitioner has sufficient development of intuition, this may very well be true. (I've known it to be true.)
"It sounds quite different from the usual practicing of freezing the picture."
Yes, that's a more advanced practice.

"Would it be incorrect to say that in this more advanced practice the behavior would be a result of intense concentration instead of a break?"
Could be.
"When you say “intuition” you mean a opening to a Briatic our a Yetziratic level of conscience?"
In this case, it could be either the formal or the casual use of "intuition." Since it's information about another person, it is more likely the casual meaning, which is essentially information arising from subconsciousness (either because it has gestated there, or because of telepathy, etc.).
