27 June (Water) Liber LXV, 3:37-39
-
37. I am like the little red dog that sitteth upon the knees of the Unknown.
38. Thou hast brought me into great delight. Thou hast given me of Thy flesh to eat and of Thy blood for an offering of intoxication.
39. Thou hast fastened the fangs of Eternity in my soul, and the Poison of the Infinite hath consumed me utterly. -
The dog is a lowly and humble symbol that is even more so sitting on its knees. The dog is looking to the master and has great delight in being nourished and intoxicated by the flesh and blood that the Angel offers. This intoxication alters the mind state and directs it in this case to the eternal and is food for the spirit. In the realization of the Eternal the temporal loses hold and the scribe is consumed by the Infinite.
The lesser is to the greater as the greater is to the whole. In truth, I don’t know if I am even in the status of an animal to the mystery. I am maybe closer to an insect aspiring to be an animal! But again – “lesser is to the greater…”. I takes this to mean that I should be looking for the eternal in all things that I may recognize the nourishment of the spirit. Step by step I may be more ready to receive and process the vibrations of the eternal.

Expanded version reads: why consider these verses every day—why keep a daily magical record, explore the psyche, develop the powers of the mind, purify ones heart, and strive ever to more?
Either we are so repulsed by the world around us that we will do anything to get out, or we so desire this absolute that we will do anything to get there. If the later, where does this desire come from?
Cupio, I desire...
My weakness is my strength it seems; my doom is my salvation. Cupio—It's a sign and symbol of the angel!

This verse seems strange and a little out of place to me, initially...
There's an animal, known as the red dog, that lives in southeast Asia. Crowley would have been familiar with it (Rudyard Kipling even has a short story called "Red Dog" about them). It's been posited as the ancestor of the domestic dog.
It sounds to me like Crowley is saying that he is just at the beginning of being 'domesticated' by his HGA. And that this 'domestication' is the inspiration of both joys (the Christian mass) and horrors (vampires) in his human mind. Just like an animal, simultaneously drawn to, and fearful of, the implications of domestication...

" 37. I am like the little red dog that sitteth upon the knees of the Unknown. "
This seems to mean something a bit different to me... .” I am like the little red dog”, I am like something that I understand. I understand a dog that sitteth upon it’s masters knees, because I have been a master of many dogs.. But I being like a dog that sitteth upon the knees of the unknown or unexplainable... Know that is obedience.
" 38. Thou hast brought me into great delight. Thou hast given me of Thy flesh to eat and of Thy blood for an offering of intoxication. "
I understand the delight thing as a dog wags its tail. Understanding the flesh and the blood part entails a lot more detail.
Is this more like understanding that we are eating and drinking the very source of the universe, or does it go beyond this to something even I cannot understand?
" 39. Thou hast fastened the fangs of Eternity in my soul, and the Poison of the Infinite hath consumed me utterly. "
I may be going off the wall in this part of my understanding...Has not our souls always sought immortality? Or is it the mortal state that has sought immortality.
Is this quest for immortality truly the poison that hinders us from seeing the truth? I mean ... well I don’t know what I mean...
Yes I believe I should be quiet so as not to argue with myself.
