Many/Mini Abysses

There's the saying around here, perhaps it originates from Jim, that one tends to cross several abysses before they are even ready to begin the Work, or something to that effect.
I've also heard in these discussions of abysses that are said to exist further down on the Tree. I think the line of thought runs something like there's a mini Tree of Life within each sephirah, but I'm not sure. That might need some correction.
But my real question is what is the nature of abysses in general? There's the possible error of dispersion at each one, right?
What's the nature of that dispersion? I guess I could be asking what is the nature of Choronzon, but the simple literal answer is that he's a demon and his nature is dispersion.
But in regard to the psyche and its relationship to the Work, what is it that brings the dispersion? What is the tendency within the self that falls prey to it? What is it in the psyche which generates it?
In short, can it be boiled down to some sort of psychic impulse against which we must guard ourselves? And if so, what?

Does the dispersion arise from a false projection of meaning onto synchronious events?
In other words, is the problem of attributing false meaning, or meaning at all, to events that would be otherwise more correctly and meaningfully understood?
Or, in an abyss, are the synchronicities themselves projections of false meanings that come from (and to) oneself?
I guess I'm trying to ask if it is the later attributed meaning that is false, or if the entire synchronicity itself is false, being generated by an internal misattribution of meaning?
Is there a difference?
Or, is the problem that this rational/questioning function of the brain is still engaged where it shouldn't be anyway?

I often say that, but metaphorically. I probably need to consider a different approach, since my intention is to dissuade people from thinking it really has anything to do with The Abyss.

See above. The old boundaries collapse. You find out that you've been "inside," and there's a larger "outside."

Yeah, probably not a good idea to get him into the mix until THE Abyss - because, actually, at earlier stages we need to grow INTO that Ruachian saturation before we can grow THROUGH it and out the other side.

"Falls prey?" It's actually a growth step... at the right time.
