Spiritism and Ancestral Veneration

"What's the basic practice?"
The simplest of practices is setting up a small altar or space anywhere in the home (the only exception being the bedroom), which is covered with a white cloth and features pictures of deceased relatives and loved ones. Glasses of cool clean water placed on white plates and, generally, white candles are burned on the altar. I happen to use tea lights or menorah candles because they are inexpensive.
At least once a week the ancestors would be saluted with the simple gesture of lighting a candle and pouring a few drops of water on the floor. The gesture is that of refreshing the earth in which they are interred and bringing light into their dark world. Prayer is left to the practicioner to decide what is most appropriate as well as what would be most appreciated.
I emphasize that these practices are widely varied and deeply personal. I am speaking in general terms because readers will immediately hit google and start saying: This site says this and that. My retort to such nonsense is simple: If you are not initiated into a house or lineage you have no clue about the real practices.
In MY House we put the ancestors up in our temples with the other spirits. They are served with a single glass of water which is to be refreshed daily and a white candle. Cigars are offered, coffee, and liquor such as rum or gin is given as tokens of honor of respect. I typically burn pontifical incense for my ancestors and sprinkle lavendar perfumes (as lavendar aides in possession and manifestation). Saturday is the day of reverence for the ancestors and the dead in general. However, one can take about five minutes each day and light a candle and refresh their water.
This Altar is a place of synergy. The practicioner would place symbols of their beliefs and gods on this altar, as well as, symbols of their ancestors beliefs. So, intuition and trial and error will be the only guide for how one should appproach this practice. I placed symbols of Khem on my altar as well as Catholic and African symbols.
The Altar is alive and from time to time you may feel the need to modify it until it has become a place of pure spirtitual manifestation.
Also, what if someone imagines (at least) that some ancestor is spiritually malevolent or manipulative?
I'm interested in what that's like. What's the basic practice?
"Also, what if someone imagines (at least) that some ancestor is spiritually malevolent or manipulative?"
That is an excellent question that many clients come to me with. Sometimes, people live cruel and evil lives, conversely, some people live tourtured lives and such trauma is carried over after death.
The answer is never easy or general. The best practice for such a situation is to give extra attention to the "malevolent" ancestor, offering light and prayer and forgiveness. Eventually, the spirit will yeild and become a loyal friend. Also, offering sweets such as candy and honey can "tame" an unruly spirit.
The Ancestors, you see, flow in your veins. They are the blood being pumped through your heart, if you reject your ancestors you reject the very blood in your veins. Most people that live with such an extreme view, even if justifiable, are very unhappy and often unhealthy people.
Many struggle in magical practices because this particular practice is neglected or overlooked. In fairness, Crowley did not have very positive things to say about seances and spiritualism in general, and that may be because of the lack of proper exposure to proper performance of such rights. Attending a seance or Misa, can be very enlightening and probably change one's preconceptions on spirits in general.

I too have an altar for my ancestors
Dr. Christiane Northrup has a mind blowing book called Mother Daughter Wisdom that deals with this issue, from a medical doctors position. She is an obgyn who works very closely, and spiritually with women to help them heal and be healthy. Even though her book is a medical book, it offers great wisdom to us as human regarding where we come from, and where we are going, and Espicially as parents how we teach and initiate our children.

Sounds like a book I need to check out. Thank you.

Heads up though,
It's filled with lots and lots of pussycat talk,I will also suggest the fantastic Naomi Wolf's book Vagina.
If you have clients whom you are helping, then that one will really help you advise them and individually cater their mode of healing.... -

But thank you. It's often difficult communicating "sensitive" information to the opposite gender. More often than not it comes across as humor, but it would be great to communicate on a more serious note.
Do you have any personal notes you would like to add to my earlier post about ancestral worship?

I worked for years in the Genealogy department of the Rochester Public Library, working with patrons tracing their family tree. The patrons were both paid professionals, as well as regular people who were interested in finding out who they were, where they came from, and what life was like for their ancestors.
It was some of the most fulfilling research I have ever done, because as each branch was uncovered, and added to their family tree it was as if these people were reclaiming a lost part of themselves, or gifting their clients with a sacred treasure.
I learned about things I never would have ever looked into, by this research it really opened doors to me, my person. My mother came from London, and they deliberately fled from that family, so it was very hard for me to find out things, because it was very hush hush, we don't want to talk about it. This past year, through a series of strange events in my own personal life, I uncovered much information about this whole thing, and it has been very healing for me in so many ways.
We are creatures of habit, repeating patterns and choices, and often these choices are not helpful or healthy but they are ingrained in us, through our biology, nature and nurture. It can be almost insurmountable for people to break family karma, fami,y choice making, that we just give up and keep going with it, because it is so uncomfortable and strange for us to change.
Understanding that we are part of a cycle, like a fractal pattern and that we will just keep the pattern repeating unless we use the Law, and consciously force a change, like doing a complete 180 degree in our habits is core to the idea of healing. One of the gifts that I have received from knowing where I come from, and where my offspring will be heading if I don't make changes, is that all people have beauty and love and light in some degree, and honoring a persons admirable qualities through ancestor altars, ( I don't really think it is worship, but more like an entrainment and honoring) keep s me intune with my humanity, and is like an enlightenment to my core, my soul to know that I am the product of that culmitive effort, and that I have the power behind me to live life to the fullest. ( horrible run on sentence, sorry).
While my family might not be beacons of honor and goodness, I love them. They might have done horrible things, but everything that they ever did is a part of me, and I have the choice to focus on those choices, or make new one. It has been one of the most important part of my growth to know my kin, to accept my family, and love them anyways.
It's easy to put a nice picture of grandma on an altar and think of feeding her wonderful qualities, because we all have wonderful qualities. It not so easy to keep that photo up when she was a SOB, but that's when we as an individual take responsible for our own choices and our humanity.

I'll say. From Magick in Theory and Practice:
"One must add a word on spiritism, which is a sort of indiscriminate necromancy --- one might prefer the word necrophilia --- by amateurs. They make themselves perfectly passive, and, so far from employing any methods of protection, deliberately invite all and sundry spirits, demons, shells of the dead, all the excrement and filth of earth and hell, to squirt their slime over them. This invitation is readily accepted, unless a clean man be present with an aura good enough to frighten these foul denizens of the pit.
"No spiritualistic manifestation has ever taken place in the presence even of FRATER PERDURABO; how much less in that of The MASTER THERION!
"Of all the creatures He ever met, the most prominent of English spiritists (a journalist and pacifist of more than European fame) had the filthiest mind and the foulest mouth. He would break off any conversation to tell a stupid smutty story, and could hardly conceive of any society assembling for any other purpose than 'phallic orgies', whatever they may be. Utterly incapable of keeping to a subject, he would drag the conversation down again and again to the sole subject of which he really thought --- sex and sex-perversions and sex and sex and sex and sex again.
"This was the plain result of his spiritism. All spiritists are more or less similarly afflicted. They feel dirty even across the street; their auras are ragged, muddy and malodorous; they ooze the slime of putrefying corpses.
"No spiritist, once he is wholly enmeshed in sentimentality and Freudian fear-phantasms, is capable of concentrated thought, of persistent will, or of moral character. Devoid of every spark of the divine light which was his birthright, a prey before death to the ghastly tenants of the grave, the wretch, like the mesmerized and living corpse of Poe's Monsieur Valdemar, is a 'nearly liquid mass of loathsome, of detestable putrescence.'
"The student of this Holy Magick is most earnestly warned against frequenting their seances, or even admitting them to his presence.
"They are contagious as Syphilis, and more deadly and disgusting. Unless your aura is strong enough to inhibit any manifestation of the loathly larvae that have taken up their habitation in them, shun them as you need not mere lepers!"

I venerate the faces and places I have been -
For there is never enough
Color -
I really, really like the idea of venerating my ancestors.
My mother, recently, took a great interest in our family lineage, going up her mothers side. She was attending a scrapbooking class, and she made her scrapbook about the old family. I never met them, of course. When she dug out the old photographs, she told me all the stories, and I have to say, I cried and cried! They were so beautiful, such wonderful people, they make me so proud, so proud! It was a major reason I've reclaimed my catholic identity, albeit not really the doctrine. Calling yourself a catholic is a big thing in Protestant Northern Ireland! Surely a gesture of will and devotion, that my ancestors are at the heart of!
I love the idea of making an altar with their religious beliefs and mine together. I'm getting lots of ideas already! I think I will make one. The lighting of votive candles is very catholic, too, very fitting. I had read about all of this before, you know, I studied Haitian Vodou very deeply a few years ago - not with the intention of practicing (I didn't really find that appropriate? But if I met a mambo or houngan willing to teach me I would have eaten it right up, of course, and I wrote dozens of poems to Papa Legba) - and I had read a bit about ancestor worship, and I saw the altars they made! Among the most impressive I have ever seen! Gosh!

Interesting...
Could you say more on what types of communications there are with ancestors or spirits? And with voodoo gods? Could you draw a parallel /indicate correspondances and differences in the initiatic way? Is voodoo supposed to initiate to Briah for instance? Is manifestation very powerful? Is there astral work(with full body projection)?

Hmmmm.
I've a few experiences down the roads of this thread.
When I first entered into occult considerations, I was too young for proper initiation, but still I remained submerged in the content, dedicated to it. I was cock-sure too. I found in reading the books of those before me that it was bits and pieces from all over that resonated with me, not one nexus over another. Conglomerate rock. So, in order to simplify the whole thing and discover what was uniquely for me, I decided to employ the above-discussed principle of "passive spirit"(as understood within Golden Dawn terminology) and let what bothers to come through go ahead and come through. I trusted in my own integrity to be able to resist what I needed to. The motto I took for this period of time was Frater Diluvium, Latin for "brother of the flood"(Hebrew gematria: 1172, English: 666, Simple: 111).
This put me through a whirlwind and taught me the definition of bottom, but in the process I learned a very practical kind of magick, a grasp on inner workings born in survival, in the Black Earth, rather than in synthetic effort. I encourage the practice of testing oneself in this way, as long as it is born of that intent. It gets ugly when you approach these manifestations as equals.
Contacting very specific ancestors is a different story(whether they be thought-forms, cognate spirits, genetic memories, whatever you want to call them). About seven or eight months ago I had a dream of being in a grove, a clearing in a forest, in which was built small huts with thatch roofs that were elevated off the ground by a sort of dock system on top of the uneven forest floor. Walking along these docks/walkways, I notice that I am wearing some sort of motley-esque shaman's garb and when I looked up there was a semi-circle of people wearing similar clothes, looking at me as if they knew me. After a second I realized that I 'knew' them too, and that I 'knew' the surrounding forest like the back of my hand. I suddenly felt the most profound sense of spiritual home and rest there, and awoke in that feeling.
After stewing on it for a bit, I found out where the grove was. Wales, before Rome, and the Saxons, and Normans... The thatching and walkways gave it away, and the colors. I saw my brother playing a historically-based video game partly set there and there they were. This aroused an interest in that place, which I hardly recognized as an entity separate from England. I discovered its unique language, culture, myths, music... In having my mother listen to some Welsh-language music, she was reminded of when she was young and her grandmother(my great grandmother) came to visit shortly before her own death. She couldn't afford to raise my grandfather when he was born so she gave him to a neighbor and he was raised thinking his own mother was the "nice neighbor lady", but revealed herself once she knew her death was near, sparking the visit. She came all the way from the UK to Michigan. While she was here, she would trail off the longer she would speak into some "incomprehensible" language and have to be shaken back to English. Upon hearing the music she realized it was Welsh she was speaking.
So now, the dream comes full circle. Turns out I was dreaming of being in Wales due to being, y'know, Welsh. Didn't even know it was something to be until after the dream. This sparked me into really diving into the Mabinogi, getting a teacher for it out of Bangor even, and engaging the place on a spiritual level. I see my work with this as a practice in honoring the past, exploring the roots of myself, and setting foundations for the future that are informed by the movements of what came before it. It's a matter of momentum. I feel that the flavors of one's True Will are largely influenced by ancestry and that a Thelemite can gain much from exploring a spiritual relationship with their genetic past. Without becoming a bigot regarding other genetic streams, of course...

"Could you say more on what types of communications there are with ancestors or spirits? "
The communications from the ancestors can manifest as omens, dreams, or even clairvoyant experiences; they are as varied as people are each unique.
"And with voodoo gods?"
The voodoo gods communicate in similar fashions; however, they are more prone to jump on someone's head if they feel it is necessary even outside of ceremonial context.
"Could you draw a parallel /indicate correspondances and differences in the initiatic way?"
Establishing the link with the Ancestors corresponds with the path of Tau. Dreams will intensify and often times non-ancestral entities will begin to communicate as well. It is very important to have strong connection with the ancestors, as they are consider the true door openers.
The Laver Tet is a rite that is performed before initiation to open the head to receive the spirit. If this is not properly performed the initiate may experience problems that may not fully manifest until it is too late to fully correct. If one is searching for a house, they should be careful of those that offer high "degrees" of initiation for a dollar amount without any sort of divination being performed prior. More often than not, people that go through this process to quickly begin to problems after the first year. Generally, the proper protocols require "foreigners" or for a better understanding: those who have never served the Lwa, to wait a year and visit many ceremonies, as well as, be properly educated on how to serve the ancestors and the Lwa in general. Personally, I visited my Papa's "house" for over a year before I was initiated. Like many others before my life was stabilized with the help of the Lwa before I was initiated.
"Is voodoo supposed to initiate to Briah for instance? Is manifestation very powerful?"
Voodoo initiation is not expressed in such terms. Typically, a potential initiate into the priesthood would have to display that they are opening to Yetziratic consciousness, before being initiated. The training that follows opens the path to secure control over yetziratic beings. Oftentimes the spirits will challenge the new priest by pushing and pulling on his/her desires and emotions. Once one has "control" of the spirit, the real process begins. It takes up to ten years for someone to become a "full" Houngan or Mambo. This process may be fast-tracked depending upon how hard the initiate works at the process. It is very demanding initially, and constant purification is done to ease the process. A Lwa Bath is not something to be taken lightly, a person may spend days bathing themselves in perfumes and herbs while the spirit aides in their development or removal of obstructions. Because of the nature and speed of the process it can be destabilizing for those not mentally sound or balanced.
Each individual develops differently, so please understand that the examples given are rather general. I know that I have given a lengthy response and still haven't answered this question so please bear a bit longer:
The new initiate is typically consider "Sur Pwen" they are taught to work with their Head Spirit and familiar spirits until they have developed enough to receive the Asson and thereby be able to pass on the Asson. The actual ceremony of become Asogwe in the tradition of the Asson is that the initiate is taught how to create the Asson. Nowadays, the tradition is to simply give the initiate an Asson and say you are now Asogwe, but it is highly irregular however becoming more popular. Holding Asson is a particular tradition, but some societies do not incorporate the Asson and still produce legitimate Asogwe. It is unfortunate that certain houses sell initiation to make money, and leaves their initiates completely dependent on their superiors. Be a wise investigator before looking for a Voodoo house, many of which portray themselves as holier than thou are often corrupt and carry little knowledge.
Now that I have clarified what is proper, I can define that the Houngan/Mambo Asogwe should have attend Briatic consciousness. There is a higher degree, less known about unless one has traveled to Haiti known as Emperor. The term is applied to High Initiates of certain societies, who hold a near absolute authority within the religion. Basically, what they say goes, and questioning their motives or degree is unwise. On that point: when two priest encounter one another and legitimacy is challenged there exists a series of signs and gesture as well as certain passwords to indicate status or rank, this is only done in person and never in a public forum. However, such things are a rare occurrence as most priests are so developed that they should immediately recognize one another.
"Is manifestation very powerful?"
I would imagine that full blown possession is as powerful as it gets. Watching a small person pick up someone almost twice there size above their head to heal them is something to behold, or witnessing a person speak fluently in a language they do not know.
" Is there astral work(with full body projection)?"
It is not widely practiced, but yes, if the knowledge of astral projection exists within a house, an initiate will be taught how to "fly" when it is appropriate.
Success with the spirit is gauged by the initiates ability to manifest results with the spirit. There are those that can heal disease such as cancer and many sorts of other forms of thaumaturgy.

I don't believe I ever implied that Voodoo is the only tradition, I did intend to emphasize that the tradition is largely found in African Tradition Religions practiced in diaspora.
Voodoo is not "passive spirit." The word Voodoo (roughly) translates to: Word and Force. It is more akin to the word Kabbalah than anything else. Just for clarification.

That is etymology I didn't know, thank you. I likened it to passive spirit in the sense of the willingness present to open up to possession by a trusted source. I admit that my understanding of Voodoo is superficial, formed from a distance to the actual traditional core(which actually just contributes to my enjoyment of the thread ).
-
No offense taken! I simply wish to clear the air of misconceptions of Voodoo, and generate understanding and relativity.
-
I should clarify to the lurkers and readers:
The viewpoints I express come largely from the way I was taught and the traditions I uphold. An internet search will provide a plethora of conflicting information and misinformation. I do not claim that the opinions I give are upheld by all, but I can say that within the house and Society I belong to they are the norm. Within the political climate of Voodoo there is great deal of Us vs Them mentality. I don't seek to build bridges between different houses or Societies, merely dispense what I consider to be useful information to bring light into an obscured realm.
I socialize with many people from various diasporic traditions and the views expressed often include what I have found to be universal in the African Tradition Religions practiced in diaspora.
Please understand that I am technically a "foreigner" that was "reclaimed" by the Lwa. I hold a particular degree of initiation within my house, and I am recognized by various priest/esses of different ATRs.
-
Would you say spirits of the "dead" tend to be easier to visibly evoke than demons and elementals, or about the same, or harder? (all things else being equal as possible)
Does it tend to be easier achieving quality inner communication with them according to their spiritual development(the higher the easier?) or more significatively according to how they relate to our true will at a particular moment, or maybe "random"?
