PRUDENCE
Eight of DisksMeditation Pattern: Place Atu XIX, The Sun, and Atu IX, The Hermit, side-by-side, with the 8 of Disks above them.
Traditional Description: A branch of a rose tree, with four white roses thereon, which touch only the four lowermost Disks. No rosebuds, but only leaves, touch the four uppermost disks. All the Disks are similar to that of the Ace, but without the Maltese cross and wings. They are arranged like the geomantic figure Populus (which is attributed to the Moon and Cancer):

Hod of Earth: Skill, prudence, cunning, caution. Discipline and skill hone practical intent into finished results; artisanship, skill at one’s craft.
Sol/Virgo: Calculation. Intelligence, skill, diligence, care to detail, methodical, orderly. Carefully applied to material matters (especially in agriculture, artifice, or building.) Overly careful in small things at the expense of great: “Penny wise and pound foolish.” Gain of money in small sums; prudent; industrious.
Mercury + Sol: Practical,resourceful, clear mind, with those character traits conducive to careful work and fine detail.

- Practicality; thorough organization of daily routine; care of details which enables the whole of a project to function with ease and harmony; successful analysis; Aristotelian phronesis.
- “Take care of the pence, and the pounds will take care of themselves”.
- Healthy nurture of seed (of whatever kind).
- Cultivating; working step-by-step, finishing phase after phase with patient attention to details; taking care of “small things that matter a great deal”.
- Wisdom that comes from practical experience; gradual motion which enables success.
- Intellect aligned with Will, concerned with practical every-day questions and tasks; honed and refined analytic ability, applied at tasks at hand.
- Purity and clearness which come from Will that is not divided in itself; and all the virtues of Virgo.
- Trade, business, traveling related to work, calculations & planning, routine that saves time and energy; “many a little makes a mickle”.
- Cleansing and purification of own character through working on little things, through daily chores, etc.
- Image appears of sifting river sand through a sieve, until only gold is left.
- To heal, to cure (practical aspects of this: details of treatment, application of required particularities, etc.), based on purification and restoration of healthy flow of individual’s energy.
- Words and knowledge stored into physical books and libraries: to know how to use them, how to “summon” out of it a specific information that is needed at the moment; encyclopedias and vocabularies. A thing has its meaning only inside a particular context; understanding of this, and adequate interpretation according to it.
- Spontaneous teaching; a master of a craft, who gained his mastery through years of practical work, attended by young who want to learn (succession of practical knowledge, craftsmanship, techniques).
- Mastering the practical and technical aspects of artistic working; self-discipline in thoughts and deeds through it.
