October 15 (Mercury) Liber VII, Cap. V, v. 46-48
-
**46. Nor by memory, nor by imagination, nor by prayer, nor by fasting, nor by scourging, nor by drugs, nor by ritual, nor by meditation; only by passive love shall he avail.
47. He shall await the sword of the Beloved and bare his throat for the stroke.
48. Then shall his blood leap out and write me runes in the sky; yea, write me runes in the sky.

There are many methods that one can try to "avail". Perhaps these all need to be exhausted and done before the last point of despair is reached. One simply awaits the presence of that which is sought. The very life of the aspirant is laid before the blade and the force of life that flows within us is given up revealing our fate.
In this, I don't think one can simply passively wait in the very beginning though it may be true this is possible. The groundwork primes us and perhaps the main realization is that by these means we do not have the power to attain by our own efforts. One thought is that this frame of mind is evolved from prior labor and is the proper setting for the surrender that follows.
