Ordeal x is commonly viewed as the Uniting of O & X, the Squaring of the Circle - the Union of the Rose and Cross. This is often seen as a reference to the Experience of the Knowledge & Conversation of one's Holy Guardian Angel.
The K&C of HGA is the pre-requisite for the admittance to the Grade of Adeptus - the Inner College of A.·.A.·.: R.·.C.·.; 'Order of the Rose Cross' - the Second Order or 'Lovers Grade'. This experience is equated with Samhadi & the Union of the self with the other:
"Unity of Subject and Object in Consciousness which is Samadhi, the uniting of the Bride and the Lamb which is Heaven, the uniting of the Magus and the God which is Evocation, the uniting of the Man and his Holy Guardian Angel which is the seal upon the work of the Adeptus Minor, is symbolized by the geometrical unity of the circle and the square, the arithmetical unity of the 5 and the 6, and (for more universality of comprehension) the uniting of the Lingam and Yoni, the Cross and the Rose." - Crowley
