Rite Weaving

Scheotolin comes with questions from those with knowledge to answer.
He is a writer, and wants to start performing magickal rites. Is it a better idea to write my own, or use ones others have made? And, if he does write his own, do you have tips for him?
Much thanks,
Scheotolin

93,
Three steps:
- Use others'
- Change others'
- Write one's own

Heya Seth
First & foremost with any ritual it's important to KNOW YOUR OBJECTIVE.
Gather as much information as you can possibly stomach, from other scholarly writers, as the information they propagate tends to be less bias to any specific pantheon.
Let the symbolism be absorbed into the psyche prior to making any ritual gestures, so that if you do decide to use another person's ritual, you will know what their objective was when creating it.
Regarding objectives, if it is unity you seek with any given God or Goddess, like any man or woman; adore that persona.
If you are already familiar with mystical states take your time & be prepared for immediate results from a ritual; because they can skew a perspective.
Also, use what time you have away from magick to engage society, whenever possible. A lot of times its just as important to put yourself in a position to receive the blessings, as it is to perform the rite of magick. I learned this one the hard way.
And, understand that ANY oath you take is binding for LIFE. I also learned this one the hard way; so it is imperative to keep a record of the oath sworn, date it with the magickal motto you used at the time & keep it safe. And more importantly, do not forget the principles you are sworn to uphold.
Years ago, [2000] I swore the oath of the abyss as Ankh F N Khonsu with two witnesses [my parents]; as my very first magickal act. It has since shaped the WHOLE of my spiritual journey. Unknown to me at the time, I became a child of their love spiritually as well as secularly & they now actively participate in my spiritual growth. Much to my chagrin, God love'em.

Just to add, and to some extent echo what has already been said:
The most important aspect of any magickal ritual is the formula being expressed at the core. The semantics and symbols are subject to change according to the will of the ritualist, but if the magickal formula changes, it is a very different ritual.
Take time to understand the ritual as given from another.
When the formula is comprehended, make small changes to suit your taste without disturbing the original formula.
Utilize the formula to craft a ritual entirely your own.Not as succinct as Aum418, but it's an important point to recognize the substance of ritual as a function underlying the mechanics.
