Opinion on works of Yogananda?
-
I'm not too familiar with him, but I've seen his works all over in bookstores, etc.
Any opinions on his writings/general message? I was considering reading Autobiography of a Yogi, but I've heard it's been considerably revamped by his organization Self-Realization Fellowship. On that note, any opinions of the SRF?

I've actually never read much of his stuff. What I've read is a solid representation of yoga; but that hasn't been much.
His book The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You is possibly the soundest Gnostic presentation of the value of the Christ mythos I've ever read.
SRF is a decent ecumenical organization. Their lake shrine at the end of Sunset Boulevard near the Pacific Ocean is one of the most serene and spiritually charged places I've ever encountered. I've been there many times over the years. Their in-town (Hollywood) center has pleasant, quiet gardens (it stands out as an island of peace even though it's only a tiny property - and right at the other end of the block from the large Scientology world headquarters complex!).
There was some connection between Yogananda and Crowley about which I'm unclear. I do know that the Golden Book of the O.T.O. from Theodore Reuss's time was (last I knew) in SRF's private library in Pasadena.

Thanks for the info. I will try to check them out sometime soon.
