The power of "good intentions"?
-
I've read different things about "good intentions." Such as - if you dabble in the occult (mediumship, ouija boards, etc.) you are somehow protected by good, though possibly naive, intentions. I am curious about people's opinions on this. I'm going to assume there *may *be benevolent powers watching over us, but I don't think they'd go the extra mile to protect folks from foolish dabbling and so forth.

From my experience I would have to say this is incorrect, but I suppose it depends on what you are doing and how you are doing it. I think that depending on what you are doing you can most definitely mess with your psyche. Remember magick is brain-change willed. If you start doing anything that changes your brain without understanding it, it can have negative effects. I know that I have personally practiced different "systems" of magick for egoic purposes years ago and it definitely had negative effects. I became more obsessed on certain things and would go into little mini obsessive depressions. I didn't realize what I was doing to myself until I started really examining what was going on. I would literally drive myself crazy for small periods of time. I'm not saying that dabbling into anything will always have negative effects, just that when you decide to do anything you should always take the proper precautions. I would recommend before and after doing anything do LBRP. I forget where I read Crowley talking about "light" v "dark" magick, and classifying "light" as anything designed to achieve K n C of HGA, and "dark", everything else. In the end Do what thou will shall be the whole of the law, but realize entering anything with naivety doesn't mean you are absolved from the consquences.

My father used to quote "the road to heaven is paved with good intentions."
I recall numerous stories and movies in which the innocent children (or stupid childlike adults) have unwittingly released some supernatural force which is now bearing down on all mankind. Thankfully for Hollywood magic the innocent ones do seem to be protected by some sort of hero, angel, or allied force who help them defeat the obstacle and save the world. The little ones did not intend to do harm, and becuase of their intent (or lack there of) they are saved and absolved.
That is what we are lead to believe anyways.
Ignorance is bliss is another saying.
I tend to think of that one when I am trying to see clearly my motivation for doing/saying/being a certain way. If I dont know what I am doing is bad/hurtful for me/others then how can something bad possibly happen? If I dont have the capabilites to understand the reprocusions of my will then how can I be held accountable? Unfortuantley the minute my mind wraps around the idea my reality catches up with me and whammy instant karma of a sorts.
Dr Wayne Dyer, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Gregg Braden, The Hicks, The Secret, What the Bleep and that whole Sounds True, Hay House bunch (while I love the message they give the masses) have stirred up allot of publicity reporting on and educating us on our Intent. Unfortunately they fail to give the masses the whole picture. I hear little of the message of accountability, discipline, dedication, and clearly knowing what it is that "they" truelly want. I have had countless conversations with what could be typed as dabblers, white lighters, new agers, and quantum spiritualist who have tapped into a sticky sweet message of intention, and got an overdose of reality. They have had a sort of diabetic crash, which borders mental breakdowns, as well as physical illness.
As a holisitc healthcare practioner I have learned that while many innocent people think they are focusing their will, intention and creating their whole healed reality they are putting a bandaide on a gunshot wound, and never develope the strenght of will to truelly analize themselves and bring about real change int thier lives. Which is sad to see.
Karma is a tangible force and one that can be easily allied with if one percerveres. I belive that all actions do have an equal and opposite reaction, and that a focused intent is a powerful way to bring into manifestion positive and helpful energies. If my whole being is focused behind my intent, wether my intent is for something culturally deemed positive or not, the laws of the universe seem to be on my side that my intention will be allowed to carry out to fruition.
I hold the idea that there is no evil or bad in the world except what I make, my perceptions. I see that all things come from a unified source and that source is neither good nor evil. So while I dont believe that these dabblers are protected by their innocent, ignorant intentions, the way the Cosmos unfolds for me is in a way that they are always looked after by loving, guiding forces that wishes for their best.

The quote I've usually seen refers to the road to hell.

Edward, you are correct. I have heard it always as the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I like to think the road to hell is paved with hookers and coke. That's why I've never made it to heaven. HAHA I just felt like throwing a joke in, enjoy lol.

93,
I don't know if intentions come in any other kind except "good".
Even so-called "bad" intentions are still good for the intender.e.g someone wants you to fail at work so they can get a promotion instead of you.
Does anyone start this path and say to themselves..."I am going to be a Black Brother/Magician."?

"I think the issue is the extent to which the intentions are in line with the True Will of that intender. I know people who've spent years trying to accomplish something without recognizing the extent to which, deep down, they don't want or need to accomplish. From that gap between TW and conscious intent arises all the mischief.

When it comes to the occult, good intent is always a healthy thing. If you think of it in terms of energy: positive in, positive out. In theory at least. The question of one's True Will arises, as mentioned--and this makes all the difference. If one is merely dabbling, without respect for the Powers That Be, Magick can be a dangerous pursuit. On the other hand, we've all had to start somewhere, usually in relative ignorance, and I personally can attest to a number of instances in which I was surely guided by a helping hand.
If one approaches Magick with pure intent, the results are often more than satisfactory.
