Choosing an order

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
I am certain that being a part of a formal order is a very salient tool, especially for someone like me who thrives off of a formal curriculum more so than a self-directed one.
Temple of Thelema is the first place I had contacted since that seemed to be the closest to me (I live in Virginia and the closest lodge is in NY.) It seems that upon some further digging, there is an O.T.O. lodge in Baltimore, which is obviously closer. I am inclined to lean toward the O.T.O. lodge simply because it would be easier for me to be physically involved.
I see that there are differences in the names of the grade- and presume in the requirements of each grade. I am a little lost in what sorts of things to consider, aside from distance, when sorting out which order to apply to.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

On www.AspirantstoLight.org, click the Contacts link at the top, and click the email link for the Los Angeles lodge. That's probably the best way to carry on a conversation.

Glad to see the Aspirants To Light is active. I saw the web page before, but didn't know if it was still an active order.
From reading thusfar it seems that this may be a good entry point for a beginner (like myself) to understand the dynamics of a lodge system before committing to a group that requires more time in attendance like possibly the TOT. One of my obstacles, even living so close, is that I take care of son till after 7pm when my wife gets home. Therefore, I've feel that out of respect to a group or teacher that I should wait till I can dedicate more time and not be a let down. However, once a month can be planned out and I can find a way of scheduling that consistently most likley. I will read up a bit more on it - thanks.

Yes, a second thank you for sharing this avenue. Would this also be a good direction for eventually establishing a College of Thelema study group in the area?

I must add... For us non-californians, this thread has been like christmas morning, and we got our red ryder we've been wanting!

Was this conversation only going to take place after joining the AL? Iโm just curious because a month has passed, and I still havenโt received a reply to the e-mail I sent. Please forgive me if I come across as impatient. I just wanted to make sure that I understood this post correctly.
Thanks,

The problem is that you targetted your long email directly at me and emphasized that you were only interested in an answer from me personally. Normally I would have nothing to do with that process (it would be handled by officers of the lodge itself) and, in that month, I've overseen two large projectrs at work, been sick a week, and spent a week out of the country. I'd be happy to answer, but I'm not really going to have time to look up and handle additional email stuff until mid-July. (Currently buried in the last weeks of preparing for an annual three-day seminar at the end of May, then two more events through early July - that's the way my life goes.)
I recommend you send another letter, don't aim it at me in the slightest, make it only a couple of paragraphs at most (expressing your interest or whatever) - this will get the attention of those who have been allowing you your privacy by not reading your prior email.

That's completely understandable. I'll do that. Thanks for the reply, Jim.
