Which East is East?

I know this probably sounds like a foolish question but here goes:
When performing a rite or setting up a temple, do you set your east to magnetic east, where the sun rises each day (which means that east and the other compass points are different each day) or where the sun rises on a particular day (e.g. the Spring Equinox)?

The former.

Thanks for the quick reply Jim. A further question revolving around Resh would be, if one were in a room where one couldn't see the sun during the day, would magnetic compass points also be used?

That's a "ballpark" orientation. For Resh, though, the ideal is to face the actual direction of the Sun's crossing of the horizon.

Thanks for the clarification.
