Wrong answer. There are still "gurus" and "chelas" in the Thelemic system, but if you have hang-ups using those words you can say "student-teacher" instead.

Sorry, I don't know of any teachers in the area but that doesn't mean their aren't any.

I also don't know of anyone around there, but maybe this is where you can start tracking down what you want.

I've been advised (but don't know from my own experience) that the following O.T.O. group is a decent bunch of folks. A casual event such as their Meetup group might give you the chance to get some local-area pointers.

Perhaps I'm trying too hard, but following one of the so-called 'gurus' I almost got brainwashed into giving up my dagger. So for now at least, I oppose any and all questions of the 'I'm searching for a guru' type. I am all for saying teacher, but 'guru' doesn't sit well with me.
Besides, I advise you look into what spiritual 'teachers' in India are doing. It's far from being honest and supportive.

            Anyway, that's just me rambling.

That's called the Ordeal of Discrimination. The lesson likely wasn't to avoid gurus, but to increase your capacity to select better.

Concurrently, everyone always gets the teacher for whom they are ready at a particular point in time. I doubt there was an error here - merely an instruction (and opportunity to learn it).

In any case, the lesson was for you - not for anyone else.

"I am all for saying teacher, but 'guru' doesn't sit well with me."

That's interesting. I'm more the opposie, since the word guru (with all of its culture-specific characteristics) has a better and deeper meaning. And it's hard to resist a word for this function that is spelled with a Gimel, a Resh, and two Vavs.
