Absinthe
-
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
In 777 Crowley has attributed Absinthe as a plant to the Path of Pe & wormwood as a perfume to the Path of Zayin...the Mercurial attribution is evident enough - but the Martial one not so much...any ideas as to why he would attribute Absinthe, which is a drug/liquere, to Mars as a plant?(Absinthe is a combination of plants) Also, does anyone have any ideas as to where Absinthe as a drug might fit on the Tree?

I would assume probably Hod right along with mescaline since it contains thujone which is a pretty powerful psychoactive/hallucinogene of sorts.

I considered that - except the way it stimulates conversation leads me more to compare it to Zayin than Hod...but the fact that thujone bonds to the same receptors as THC makes me think more of Vau because A) Hashish is attributed to Chokmah, to which Vau leads & B) Cannabis has a definite Venereal, earthy quality. Any thoughts?

Good points but conversation can equally be attributed to any of the mercurial paths. This makes me think of Beth and its attribution to Thoth. Also Chockmah is the highest aspect of mercury which points to a link between Hashish and mescaline. The concept that thujone works on the cannabinoid receptors was a misconception and is known to work on the GABA receptors. Check it out here:
Ultimately I guess the most concise course of action would be to use it in ritual and see what is most harmonious with it. Too bad we can't get the good stuff here.

Sure you can!...the ban was lifted last year. Most liquor stores carry it now...if I can get it in Tupelo, MS, I'm sure you can get it in GA!

They still only sell two kinds. I have a bottle of Lucid in my fridge, but I was told by a friend that these two specific brands aren't as potent as the stuff over seas. This was supposedly why these where the only two allowed to be imported.

You can order it from websites online. As well as purchase just the tujone itself.

I have been ordering Absinthe from over seas for some time now - & the Suisse Kubler brand is every bit as strong as them...the Lucid brand also is decent - but not my favorite. It isn't that there isn't as much thujone in them - it's simply that there never was. A cache of pre-ban Pernod Absinthe was discovered & its thujone-level was tested. What they found was that, contrary to belief, the thujone content was already below the allowed level, & it was this finding that Breaux presented to the FDA wich allowed it's production to begin again after over 100 years of prohibition. The recipes being used now are the same as the 18th & 19th century ones...the thujone-level has not been altered at all.

post script: A lot of people aren't aware of this - but Green Chartreuse has a higher thujone count than any Absinthe ever tested. It undoubtedly contains wormwood & other thujone-rich herbs, but since the recipe has remained secret since the 16th century, no one really knows what's in it. 666 hinted at its use in his comment to Liber Stellae Rubeae.

"This is interesting. I always thought that verse refered to Absinthe. Have you ever tried to find this Green Chartreuse?

Oh yes...& it is truely a treat. It should be available at any upper-class liquor store. The recipe comes from a 16th century alchemical manuscript entitled An Elixer of Long Life. It was given as a gift to the Chartreusian monks in 1605 by king Henri IV of France & it took them almost 200 years to fully decode the manuscript & locate all of the 130 something odd herbs it called for...I highly recommend the Elixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse...it is the version of the liquere that most closely follows the recipe as given in the manuscript. The Green Chartreuse follows the recipe but it is a watered-down version made for general consumption...the Yellow Chartreuse is the same - but watered-down to a further extent for even more casual drinking. The Elixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse should be used as a tincture, while the Green & Yellow Chartreuses are great on the rocks and/or mixed with tonic water.
