Question about Table 504
-
What is the rationale behind the planetary rulers of the paths of the Signs of the Zodaic? I've always wondered. They don't correspond to the rulership exaltation of the signs, most of the time. Also, what is the origin of table? Does it come from Crowley, or is it earlier?

The application of elements to the zodiacal triplicities is a Medieval invention. However, the triplicities themselves were recognized much earlier. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, said the first triad (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) was of the nature of Sun and Jupiter; the second triad (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) was of the nature of Moon and Venus; the third triad (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), of the nature of Mercury and Saturn; and the fourth triad (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) of the nature of Mars.
