Thoth tarot indicator card
-
Hello all,
While this is not specifically "ceremonial magick", I did not see an opened threat for tarot. Does anyone have experience using the Thoth as a divination tool? If so, I have traditionally learned (when dealing with other decks) that the indicator card should be a court card. I have read DuQuettes. Understanding Aliester Crowley's Thoth Tarot and he doesn't seem to give much direction into the matter. Does anyone see a particular problem with using a Trump card as an indicator? Would it be overly arrogant? Would a "pip" card be too narrow?
Thank you.

(Divination falls under Magick. Good choice for a spot.)
First of all, there is no standard answer. It depends on the particular Tarot technique you are using. The answers could be highly diverse. Some techniques, for example, don't even require selecting a significator a priori, or let the spread itself do the selecting. But, for those that require you to select one in advance...
Usually an a priori indicator is a Court Card, yes. They are the only cards complex enough to represent people. Less often, it can be a Trump, especially if a more archetypal (non-mundane) expression of a person is desired, or if you want to focus on a sign of the zodiac, etc. But, again, this will vary with the Tarot technique being used and with the occasion.

The Court Cards, as mentioned above, have the deep complexity to be human, so are especially useful for most significator purposes. Trumps can be used as mentioned above. The Minor Arcana are usually far too simple, but could be useful if one represents the particular condition in which you find yourself, e.g., if you're dealing with inertia and inability to get moving on something, especially due to emotional flatness or lack of enthusiasm, then the 7 of Disks might be a useful significator (especially in a spread like the Celtic Cross) to understand the particular issue at it now exists.
