    48. Also I heard the voice of Adonai the Lord the desirable one concerning that which is beyond.
    49. Let not the dwellers in Thebai and the temples thereof prate ever of the Pillars of Hercules and the Ocean of the West. Is not the Nile a beautiful water?

So, someone tell me why the second line needs the first...

I mean, if Adonai is going to go out of his/her way to talk about the unknown, shouldn't we assume it is to tempt us with the mystery of that darkness? Or maybe he is discouraging us. If so, why?

Oh, please don't make this a parable about the evils of being discontent—if you touch it it will fall off!

I do not live in Thebes. I live in LA, and our river sucks!

The best I can do here is to equate the ocean of the west with Nirvana, or some cognate concept of absolute annihilation. In which case, the exposition of Adonai is there to convince us that we don't need to make a final end of it—there is something that remains and that something is a shit load of fun.

    Love and Will

48 = Crowley hearing "The Next Step" teaching for human kind
49 = Follow the system in front of you to it's logical conclusion and don't worry about the other systems out there.

SO in my head, I read it that Crowley is hearing his HGA saying 2 things, the one a logical conclusion to the other:

    1. Teach KCHGA
    2. Teach it with the tools you have been given - there is nothing else you need - those are other paths and other tools out there, but you have everything already in your fools bag that the magician requires.

Not sure if this is at all relevant,

I live a stone throw away from the mighty 144 miles long Genesee which I learned as a child runs from the south to the north.
The Nile which is 4150 miles, also flows north.

Primitive minds may have seen that fact as extremely impressive I know the local lore attributed many strange and beautiful qualities to the river and it's annual flooding.

And the poor LA river does really even have a flow......lol.
    Well maybe concrete,
    Great for filming thou...
