What timespan is mastery of holding an image in mind? How many minutes?

"When you feel you have attained some success in these practices, apply for examintion..." Pass or try again later. It is self explanatory.

I'm not in the AA. With that said I'd say 10 minutes without breaks would be a major step forward. Then next step the various dhyanas if the asana /pranayama experience is substantial.

In asana and pranayama, you already demonstrate dharana. Though, dharana as such is of a higher level and nature. The results should be judged in terms of how they relate to your whole path and step.

I won't be doing dharana whilst doing alternate nostril pranayama but when the body is at rest.

Yes I see your point, the whole path.
