Microcosmic vs Macrocosmic Elements?

I can't seem to find a good explanation of these two sets of elements. I understand that the microcosmic elements refer to the elements of the fixed zodiac cross. Is it the cardinal or mutable elements that correlate to the macrocosmic elements?
What is the practical application of these different sets of element? Are there any good resources available for understanding these?
