It's just a model. Sure, in astrology there are severe weaknesses and houses may not even exist; but Tarot is simply lifting a framework to talk about things, and one can use it without it being more complicated than that.

If it helps you... in the original framework in which a 12-house system was framed, Taurus was not equated to the 2nd house. Mars-ruled Scorpio was.

Actually, now I think about it, my gut says:

Towards Fire to invoke Active
Towards Water to invoke Passive
Towards Air to banish Active
Towards Earth to banish Passive

Ah, here's the old thread I was looking for. The reference to page 94 is even more valuable. I was stopping with the instruction on the Lesser and not reading the Greater Ritual of the Hexagram instructions nor the addendum. Not there yet.

By the way, while this could be a matter of external enforcement, the typical form is that it's automatic. One expels oneself by breaking something within oneself by betraying the trust.
