How I perform it is I believe how it's supposed to be done but I do it like so:
I envision the archangels standing behind the pentagrams that I drew around me facing towards me.
The hexagrams appear as one below my feet and one above my head. In the line "in the column, shines the star of six" or any of the hundred other variants, I envision a pillar on light going between the two hexagrams with me in that pillar and everything else around me turning to darkness/space.

No. The pentagrams are drawn as if on at an infinite distance - one of the reason for keeping one's arm perfectly straight through the whole process (so that proportions remain the same at all distances). The archangels are thus within them (as all things are), at the perimeter of one's area of operation.

Do the Hexagram Ritual more or less as if the Pentagram Ritual hadn't been performed, i.e., don't try to fit them together. They're operating in different octaves anyway.
Like the pentagrams, the hexagrams are drawn at an infinite distance.
