Using Single Pentagrams

In what situation would one use a single pentagram? I've heard mention on this forum before of their use but I have yet to see anywhere a detailed account of their usage. Would anyone mind giving some usages and practical applications of the single pentagram?

One example is when consecrating a talisman or implement.

I have always been confused by the fact that the GD paper on the Pentagram Ritual says "and always complete the cricle of the place" yet in the Elemental Initiation ceremonies the Pentagram is traced only in the quarter attributed to the Element. What is special about this instance?

Iit's not the quarter as such; it's that the Elemental Tablet is placed there. Everything traced is traced over the Elemental Tablet as part of the magick of opening or activating it.

In that sense, it's a specialized example of consecrating something.
