Magick and Creativity

"When I was younger, I managed to delay an LSD trip by several hours by working away on a pastel work. The trip only kicked in when I'd finished. The meditative state I go into when I'm working seemed to stop the acid from plugging into my nervous system. I've always been curious as to how that came about."
Interesting. Maybe just the creative act (and the level of concentration) of your artwork is along the same functions as your brain function on LSD? It seems plausible...definitely interesting...

"Can I spell theater with an "re"? "
Yeah, the "re" spelling comes from the French. I prefer theater with an "er." Though I will sometimes get mixed up, because re is more commonly used, or I will just defer to "re" to be polite, because people think that's how it is spelled. Both are correct, but I still think Theater is more correct, not that it matters much.

"I am the same way. I find I have no problem coming up with creative work, but that my magick could definately use some work. I do not suffer from writers or artists block.
Right now I am experimenting with a technique in magical writing. I will let you know how it turns out if you are interested in that sort of thing, although it is more of a chaos magick technique rather than anything that falls under the banner of Thelemic rituals, so I am not sure anyone on this forum would care no matter how well or poorly it works.

I'd love to hear about your experiments and techniques. Others may disagree, but the magickal/mystical approach of the A.'.A.'. (for me) is largely a "chaos magick" approach. Carroll and Hine (and others) have grabbed most of their techniques from Crowley and Spare, who were both members of the A.'.A.'. (although Spare didn't stay long). In any event, shifting paradigms and the techniques involved is the basis of both systems, combining various training methods and views, regardless of the rhetoric and dogma...
So, yeah. I'd love to hear about the experiments themselves. That's why I started this thread...

I have been using the following invocation....
written by DemiGods Brothers Gibband I dance,
with my tambourine as I sing......
under my disco lights"More Than A Woman "
Oh, girl Ive known you very well
Ive seen you growing everyday
I never really looked before
But now you take my breath awaySuddenly you're in my life
Part of everything I do
You got me working day and night
Just trying to keep a hold on youHere in your arms I found my paradise
My only chance for happiness
And if I lose you now I think I would dieOh say you'll always be my baby
We can make it shine, we can take forever
Just a minute at a time(chorus)
More than a woman, more than a woman to me
More than a woman, more than a woman to me
[More than a woman, oh, oh, ohThere are stories old and true
Of people so in love like you and me
And I can see myself
Let history repeat itselfReflecting how I feel for you
Thinking about those people then
I know that in a thousand years
I'd fall in love with you againThis is the only way that we should fly
This is the only way to go
And if I lose your love I know I would dieOh say you'll always be my baby
We can make it shine, we can take forever
Just a minute at a time, huh -
93,
I found that through learning the guitar and music, practicing for up to 8hrs or more per day, I was practicing core elements of Magick and Yoga, learning both concentration and how to essentially become a "conduit" for the creative force. Magick/Mysticism practices and musical practices definitely play off of one another -- and inform one another -- in my experience.
I'm blanking at the moment, but I know A.C. had made a point somewhere (probably "One Star in Sight") that every Aspirant should have a strong grasp of at least one of the arts, as well as a couple of the sciences. Mainly I find that my self-development through Magick/Mysticism is aiding my creativity by teaching me to "get out of my own way" creatively; but it also gives invaluable practical insights.

Well, my little experiment with writing did not work. So, nothing to see there. At least I can say it did not backfire on me or cause the opposite of what I wanted to happen. I think art might just be a better medium for magick for whatever reason.

"I was hoping that we could have a discussion based on Magick and its uses in the "traditional" arts: writing, drawing, music, photography, performance, etc. I know there are a bunch of artists on this forum and I'd love to hear from everyone regarding this topic."
First of all, great topic! Glad it was bumped...
"Does anyone use particular invocations before creating? Do you find certain ones more helpful than others? Is there anybody that uses automatic writing or drawing with any regularity? Does anybody use Magick for performance art in general (other than ceremonial)?"
Yes. I use regularly the Lesser Banishing Rituals of the Pentagram and Hexagram, the Greater Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, the Star Ruby, and the practices of Pranayama/Dhyana and Mantra work. Dhyana in particular seems to put me in a state of mind which is very conducive to stream-of-consciousness type work. Lately I've stumbled across an inner wellspring of poetry after working with Mantra/Pranayama and the two Lesser Banishing rituals. Such is my method as of late: I sit in the Dragon pose and chant AVM for however many times I feel necessary, usually in sets of eleven. I then rise and complete either the two Lesser Banishings or the Star Ruby. Thus fortifying my aura I set about whatever work I have in mind. More often than not I will supplement my work before and after with a toke or three of cannabis.
"My main art is music - performing jazz mainly. I've experimented with various invocations for writing (attempting stream-of-consciousness) with interesting results. Also, I've used psychoactive substances (not advocating it, of course ) coupled with ritual before automatic drawing with extremely interesting results. "
Lately I've gotten back into the practice of Zazen after re-reading selections from Dwight Goddard's collection "A Buddhist Bible." This supplements well my Magical workings as it provides the focus so necessary to such work. I've been doing some stream-of-consciousness work that has been very satisfying as well, especially since I've had a long period of writer's block lately.
I myself am a performing musician, as you might have surmised since I have posted a bit about my basic theories regarding Music and its effect on consciousness and its evolution. I studied jazz in college for a couple years, and I find that Miles Davis in particular puts me in a very creative mood. "Bitches Brew" is an outstanding example of ritual Musick in action; I listen to it often before and after workings.
"I usually perform some sort of ritual before performing music. Does anyone else use Magick before creative endeavors regularly? Has anyone else done so in the past? What are/were your experiences? Do you find it to enhance your creative performance?"
I find that the particular regimin I outlined above has excellent effects for my creative faculties and provides the focus and mindset necessary to the performing arts. Of course my methods are evolving as I evolve as an artist and what works for me might have different effects for someone else. That being said, the practice and theory of Magick provides a wealth of symbolism and conceptual architecture all which lends itself perfectly to the Arts. Magick in all its branches has a way of rendering the artist fertile, and lends a framework on which the artist can map his experiences and arrange them in a manner that corresponds to the harmonies in nature.
There's a great little book I picked up a while ago, called "Quadrivium," that examines the theory and correspondences of Music, Astronomy, Language, and other such basic branches of thought. The sections on Music and Astronomy have been a great supplement to my studies.

"I hate to kill the thread off but all magical practices are no more than a tool for an artist to keep him omn his artistic path. How many non creative magikians can you name? None"
I know quite a few (especially several successful painters). I can't name them, though, because they aren't public.

I'm self employed in interior design and renovation business and creating the main concept design ideas and managing them to be built.
When Im checking in to a new project (that mostly is an empty house or land), I consecrate the place with invocation of 4 quadrants angels in each side of property and after that I move around the property with the verse "Hekas,Hekas, este bebeloi.". after then Star Ruby. With standing in the middle of project I'm performing Star sapphire invoking moon and sometimes Liber samek with the oath of finding a proper concept for design the place with the existence circumstances.
Then I go for a meditation using Eck mantra (HeeYoo) or my personal mantra that make me deep. and with Middle pillar Im charging the place and with LD and Star Ruby close the rite. Most of time the design idea doesn't come on right at time, but hours or days later I get the idea from a building in street, magazines, movies or daydreaming.
In this case I didn't mean that the idea just came from the ritual ('cuz I did this job as long as my career started when I was not in magick seriously), but those always make me feel better in my work place and encourage me to do what I like, away from cliche and client's interferences.I also think that evocation of some goetic spirits like Malathas(38th), Malaphas(39th),Sabnock(43th) or Vine(45th) can helpful in construction business , but I did not anything about. Maybe later.

Ladies and Gentlemen, witness a being who has grasped the practice of Practical Magick as it relates to an individual. Excellent example; thank you for sharing, Frater Bzalel. I am glad to know that through you Iran is being brought into harmony with the Aeon's energies (or the "current current," you might say*); I do something like the same thing when I travel: in short, I invoke the Powers of Thelema with the lines from the Stele in a ritual context. Conducting this at the ritual centers of Southern Mexico and the Yucatan was a powerful experience. I did this also at major sites in Greece. Like you, I tend to view this habit with a business manner: the way I understand it, activating these energetic points using the Thelemic current is an important step in bringing needful planetary evolution.
*I apologize for the bad pun.

Haha! Sometimes it takes two years. It's really cool to revisit my thought process when it came to magick even two years ago. TIme flies when you're having fun.
I have to say that the more formal rituals are no longer used before an actual performance...but I enjoy more success than ever before.

Sweet! Would love to hear some of your work. Please let's share.
Speaking of music and effects on consciousness, I used to be extremely fascinated with the I-Ching trigrams and its relation to the scales of western music. Let me know if you're interested...I'll email you a nifty but simple layout...its actually pretty interesting...
As far as sharing, here you go:
Me playing guitar in a song that I put together with Miss Erika Davies. I did the music -- she wrote the lyrics. Hope you like it! I'm also into many other genres, of course...
