Portal signs

I am a little confused about the use of the Portal signs in conjunction with the GRP; Is the "Rending of the Veil" used for invoking, and the "Closing of the Veil" used for banishing?, or, is the Rending used with the active elements and the Closing with the passive elements? IIRC, in Regardie's Golden Dawn, the active/passive scheme as applied to the Spirit pentagrams is the one presented, yet that doesn't make sense to me considering how the Portal signs are named...

For a time, I used Opening to invoke and Closing to banish... but that was, at least, not the original intention.
The original intent was: The Portal grade corresponds to Spirit, sitting atop the four elemental grades. When making the Spirit pentagram (active or passive, invoking or banishing), you follow with the corresponding grade sign which, for Portal, is both signs - Opening and then Closing.
As the ritual says, "The first is always answered by the second."

. So was this a "blind" that was written in the Golden Dawn paper on the GPR concerning that the "Rending of the veil" should be used with the active spirit pentagrams, and the "Closing of the veil" should be used with the passive spirit pentagrams? -
