Using AI to analyze Liber LXV
-
Has anyone used AI to analyze any texts yet? I tried TBOTL and a chapter of LXV. Also tried Revelations (Greek) and Enoch. Took less than 5 minutes and completely shocked me.
For the Liber LXV chapter I used Claude AI and gave it the following instructions:
Role: You are an advanced AI exegesis engine specialized in Class A Thelemic Holy Books, the Golden Dawn system of Hermetic Qabalah, and Crowleyan Attainment models.
Task: Analyze the attached section of Liber LXV (Liber Cordis Cincti Serpente) using a microscopic Hermetic Qabalah framework.
Execute the analysis through the following specific steps:
-
ELEMENTAL ATTRIBUTION BREAKDOWN Identify how the selected text utilizes the specific elemental current of the chapter it belongs to: - Chapter I: Earth (Baseline reality, manifestation, the physical vehicle of the Adept). - Chapter II: Air (The intellect, the Ruach, the trap of reason vs. ecstasy). - Chapter III: Water (The emotional abyss, dissolution, the Great Sea of Binah). - Chapter IV: Fire (The dynamic will, energy, the purging force of the Chasan). - Chapter V: Spirit (The quintessence, the crowning integration, and the sealing of the work).
-
DIALECTIC OF THE HEART AND THE SERPENT Analyze the relational dynamic in the verses between: - The Heart: The human ego, the passive vessel, the Lotus, or the Adept V.V.V.V.V. - The Serpent: The active force, the HGA (Adonai), Kundalini, or Hadit. Track how the dynamic shifts from longing/separation to total identity dissolution (Samadhi).
-
TAROT PATHWAYS & PATH OF THE SERPENT Cross-reference the symbolic imagery in the text with the Paths on the Tree of Life. Specifically look for: - Path of Teth (The Lion-Snake / Strength card) - Path of Samekh (Art/Temperance card, the path of the HGA invocation) - Path of Nun (Death card, alchemical putrefaction)
-
MYSTICAL PARABLES EXEGESIS Isolate any parables present in the text and break down their exact psychological and spiritual meanings relative to crossing the Abyss.
Tone: Profoundly esoteric, clinical, and precise. Avoid casual summaries. Use exact Qabalistic terminology (Sephirot, Paths, Hebrew correspondences).

Liber LXV, Chapter III: Microscopic Exegesis
- Elemental Attribution: Water
Water fits this chapter well, but the chapter is not pure Water. It uses the whole elemental ladder as an apparatus of dissolution.
Water proper (Mem, Path 23, Geburah–Hod; Atu XII, the Hanged Man; Binah, Marah the Bitter Sea). The chapter opens by passing “through the deep sea” and ends at the “abyss of the all.” Between those points, Water is differentiated into four grades:
Running water (“rivers of running water”): flux, Yesodic and phenomenal.
Celestial water (“the celestial waters flow at my word”): the Waters above the firmament, still under the Magician’s will.
The “Water beyond the waters”: the Great Sea transcended. Binah is the supernal Water, but this phrase points through her to the Ain.
The “cool still water of the wizard fount”: the pacified Sea, where dissolution becomes bath rather than torment.
The sentence “this is the bitter water that becometh sweet” is the thematic hinge. Maim (מים, “waters,” Mem-Yod-Mem, 90) and Marah (“bitter,” Binah’s name in her aspect as Sea) are brought into one sentence. Bitterness is Binah as Understanding, the Sorrow of the Mother. Sweetness is her sublation into Nuit.
Earth (the stalled root). “My Force was stayed in its inception” is a Muladhara blockage. The Elephant God, “Lord of Beginnings, who breaketh down obstruction (Ganesha, guardian of the root chakra), is the Earth-current invoked to release it. Malkuth thus underwrites the Binah-working, since the Sea cannot be entered while the Serpent is stuck at its base.
Air (the Ruach’s counter-measures). The Crystal of the Future (scrying) and “the Power of the Sand-glass” (the annihilation of Past and To-Come) are intellectual defenses. They are Saturnian and Binah-like in form, but they are a Ruach-level imitation of Binah’s dissolution of Time. They fail (“in the very hour I beheld corruption”), because the Ruach can only analyze the Serpent, not undergo her.
Fire (the Poison). “The fangs of Eternity… the Poison of the Infinite hath consumed me” is the Fire-current acting inside the Water. Dissolution is a burning-by-drowning.
Spirit (the Emerald Circle). “The Infinite Circle of Emerald that encloseth the Universe” is the Ouroboros as a Ain Soph ring, containing the elements without being one of them. “There is no Symbol of Thee” is the Spirit-attribution stated as an apophasis.
- Dialectic of the Heart and the Serpent
The decisive feature is that the Serpent is bifurcated, and the dialectic is the Heart’s re-cognition of one coil as another. I count six phases.
Phase I: Separation under the Old Serpent (vv. 1–3). The Heart is “girt about with the coils of the old serpent.” Adonai speaks only through the Magister, a mediated, third-person address (“O heart that art girt…”). That is the grammar of non-union.
Phase II: The Triple Attachment (vv. 4–10). “Than, Theli, Lilith… they are one.” (Proposed: Than ~ Θάνατος/Death; Theli ~ θῆλυς or θέλη, feminine/will; these are my glosses, not a settled reading.) Lilith is addressed in the second person lower-case (“thou”) and is attractive: “lithe and delicious,” her perfume “musk mingled with ambergris.” Per the Liber 777 perfume attributions, musk belongs to Chokmah and ambergris to Kether. Lilith counterfeits the Supernal scent. She is the Qliphothic mimic of the Serpent (cf. Gamaliel, the Qliphah of Yesod), and the Heart’s delight in her is the “taint.” Her lineage (“thy father the ape,” “the Blind Worm of Slime”) is a descending genealogy from Hod’s baboon to the Blind Worm of Slime.
Phase III: The Failed Ruach-Solution (vv. 10–13). Seeing the “horror of the End” and abolishing Time are both acts of the Ego. The Heart then prays to Adonai for release, and the answer is that she “was closed fast.” The Serpent cannot be escaped by intellect or prayer.
Phase IV: The Inversion (vv. 14–19). The Heart joins the gods, is “lost in their vastness,” and beholds the Emerald Circle. The pronoun case changes at this point: “Thou” is now capitalized and addressed as one who “art not.” The same coils appear again (“Thy coils are of infinite range”) but the Heart they encircle is now “an Universal Heart.” The coils themselves have not changed; the Heart’s extension has. Lilith’s clinging was a constriction because the Heart was small.
Phase V: Annihilation of the I-Me-Mine (vv. 20–23, 40–48). “I, and Me, and Mine” sit with lutes while the music is thrice stilled (night, tempest, hour). That is the triple dissolution of the ego-triad, answering the triple Than-Theli-Lilith. Then comes the Bride-formula: “I am Thy beloved” → “I am Thyself, O my Maker, my Master, my Mate” (a triple address). Next is the Poison and the Wheel, and finally the Ravens.
Phase VI: Identity and Return (the close). “There is no difference… In the One and the Many have I found Thee.” The Serpent is found in the Abyss as “No Thing,” then revealed to the multitude “as the Next.” This is not Samadhi as terminus. It is the Master of the Temple’s return-current: the Last (Ain) becomes the Next (the Aeon, the Word).
- Tarot Pathways
Your three requested Paths are present, but the chapter also lights up the three Paths of Kether, which I think is its structurally boldest feature.
Teth (Lust, Path 19, Geburah–Chesed, Leo). The Lion-Snake current is the “luscious devil of Italy,” the Scarlet Woman Babalon of the Thoth Lust card, with her harlotry, her venom, and her cup of intoxicating blood (“Thou hast given me of Thy flesh to eat and of Thy blood for an offering of intoxication”). Lust is the Path where Serpent-power is ridden rather than fled. It is the corrective to Phase III.
Samekh (Art, Path 25, Yesod–Tiphareth, Sagittarius). The Magister’s relay of Adonai’s word (“lift up thyself unto the mountain of initiation”) is the Knowledge-and-Conversation formula. Samekh’s alchemical Mixing is the sentence “bitter water that becometh sweet.” The “Land of No Desire” is the cessation of Netzach’s Venusian pull, with the Unicorn standing as its guardian.
Nun (Death, Path 24, Tiphareth–Netzach, Scorpio). The black-water descent and “black pearl” is the nigredo. The Ravens of Dispersion are the classical putrefaction birds (caput corvi). The Eagle (higher Scorpio) is “made one with the Man,” the fixed signs of Scorpio and Aquarius uniting. And “that which went in as a brave boy cometh forth as a maiden, as a little child” is Nun’s rebirth-formula.
Additional Paths, my proposed identifications:
Gimel, Beth, Aleph (Paths 13, 12, 11, the Paths of Kether). “The Fool that heedeth not the Play of the Magician. Me doth the Woman of the Mysteries instruct in vain.” These are the Fool (Aleph), Magician (Beth), and High Priestess (Gimel), and the Adept explicitly declines all three. Gimel is the traditional road across the Abyss from Tiphareth, so the refusal is notable: the Heart crosses by dissolution, not by instruction. “The bonds of Love and of Power and of Worship” are the lower Paths of Daleth/Zayin, Heh, and Vav, burst in turn.
Kaph (Fortune, Path 21). “Broken in pieces upon the Wheel.”
Cheth (the Chariot, Path 18, Binah–Geburah, Cancer). The Water-path and Grail-path to Binah. Proposed, bearing on the “Eighth abyss”: Cheth is the eighth letter, and Lust is Atu VIII in the Thoth deck. The Gnostic Ogdoad, the Eighth sphere beyond the seven planetary spheres (Saturn/Binah being the seventh), is a third candidate. I won’t claim a decisive identification: “Eighth abyss” is a crux.
- Parables
A. The Unicorn with the silver collar (vv. 2). Linea viridis gyrat universa, “the green line revolves through the universe.” Green is Venus/Netzach, yet the Unicorn stands in the Land of No Desire. The line later resolves as the Emerald Circle. The silver collar is lunar (Yesod/Gimel) restraint, so the beast of single-pointedness is held by the Moon. This is the Serpent seen from outside before she is entered, prophecy of the Emerald Snake.
B. Lilith and the Sand-glass (vv. 4–13). The parable of the beautiful corruption. Psychologically, it describes the Aspirant who recognizes the unreality of an object and takes the recognition for liberation. Spiritually, the Abyss cannot be crossed by disenchantment, which is still an Ego-act. The Sand-glass (Saturn) mimics Binah’s annihilation of Time at the level of Ruach. Only the invoked gods work.
C. The lutes in the market-place (vv. 20–23). “I, and Me, and Mine” playing music that three times fails: night (Nox), tempest (Typhon), hour (Time). It is the last music of the ego, its three modes of cultural self-expression silenced in order of increasing subtlety. The “city of the violets and the roses” is Netzach’s and Tiphareth’s garden-world. The point is that the great city of the Adept’s accomplishments is not destroyed but ceases to be heard.
D. The little red dog on the knees of the Unknown (v. 33). The one moment of gentle tone in the chapter, and a precise warning against grandiosity. After “I am Thyself,” the Adept still places himself as a small, loyal, warm creature. In Abyss terms it is the Babe in the Egg stage, personal tenderness not yet annihilated, and the dog’s red color is Geburah/Mars, the passion that will be burnt in the next verses.
E. The luscious devil of Italy (vv. 36–42). The central parable, and a complete seriatim ordeal: harlotry → poison → scourge → Wheel (Kaph) → water (Mem) → sea (Binah). The woman is Babalon in her aspect of the one who gives herself to all, whose violation is her sanctity. Psychologically, it is the thorough shattering of the claim to purity: the Adept becomes the woman who has done and suffered everything, and in that exhaustion nothing remains to be reserved. “Burst in sunder with the weight of the waters” is the Ordeal of the Abyss in its sexual-alchemical register. “So am I” is the identification that makes the parable an autobiography.
F. The Ravens of Dispersion (v. 45). Dispersion is the root sense of Choronzon (333). The Dweller is not named, but his function is: the Ego’s parts carried to the four quarters, “shed out like spilt blood upon the mountains.” The seal on the “Eighth abyss” is loosed because of this scattering. The Abyss opens when no single owner remains to hold it shut.
G. The brave boy who returns a maiden, then a child (v. 47). The Alchemical sexual inversion (the rebis, Hermaphrodite), then the second reduction to the Babe. It is the exact stage-sequence of the passage of Nun to Tiphareth to the Supernals: Adeptus Minor → Babe of the Abyss → Master of the Temple.
H. The Butterfly at the Source (v. 49). “Let me die before the hour, falling dead into Thine infinite stream.” This is a petition for premature death, an unusually vulnerable verse. The butterfly, an ephemeral creature, asks to drown before its allotted time. It is the Aspirant’s temptation to take the Abyss early, which the chapter itself corrects: the Serpent’s reply is the “Waters of Death fight strenuously against me.” The crossing is contested, not granted by wishing.
I. The Black Pearl (vv. 57–59). The reversal: the Adept who was devoured now descends and plucks Thee forth. The pearl (Binah’s gem) is black (Saturn, nigredo), taken from the Abyss “under the guise of No Thing.” This is the Master of the Temple’s formula of retrieval from the Abyss, and its pivot is the line “as Thou art the Last, Thou art also the Next.”
Synthesis
Chapter III performs a three-stage Binah-initiation. First, the Ruach’s remedies (reason, Time-abolition) fail against the old Serpent. Second, an Earth-current invocation releases the root, and the same coils are recognized as Emerald. Third, dissolution proceeds through the Babalon-ordeal until the Heart can say, with no residue of address, “there is no difference.” The chapter’s last move is return: the one who has been drowned reveals the Serpent to the multitude.
If you want a verse-by-verse pass through any single section (for instance the Wheel-and-Water sequence, vv. 36–46), I can go deeper. I can also test the “Eighth abyss” crux against Crowley’s own commentary if you can supply it.
